Lower Than Atlantis' brand new album 'World Record' graced our stereos in April, check out our review below.
It’s clear that the lads from Lower Than Atlantis are partial to a drop of lager, after catching up with them recently after their support slot on We Are The Ocean’s Manchester date. It’s also very clear that Mike, Ben, Dec and Eddy are the best of friends, and this both these points are displayed to brilliant effect on the new album World Record.
Rather than appearing ostentatious and egotistical (the title of the album is in fact meant to reflect the trans-national recording of the record), Mike Deuce’s personal, at times even hedonistic lyrics reflect just what it’s like to be 21st century ‘lads on tour’.
Album opener (Motor) Way Of Life is a kind-of rockumentary detailing LTA’s life on the road, a relentless repeat of the open road, sweaty venues, fans, groupies, sleeping bags and making memories. There are many moments on the album which belie the band’s youthful appearance, and show a true maturity- Another Sad Song is a beautifully heartfelt self-reflection on mistakes made, which builds into a stadium-rock crescendo which would make the likes of Jimmy Eat World or the Foo Fighters proud. At the other end of the scale, tracks like Bug perfectly epitomise all that is brilliant in the alt-rock genre right now, and also hints toward the bands’ influences along the lines of At The Drive In and Rival Schools.
World Record is a terrifically slick slab of British rock, with a glorious Fender twang which matches Deuce’s soaring vocals. The two singles Beech, Like The Tree and Deadliest Catch are testament to this- the former sounding blissfully lovesick, the latter less cheery. The album is tentatively schizophrenic, full of emotional highs and lows- it is this quality which will undoubtedly bring reward by catapulting the band into the big-time.
Despite being branded as Punk Rock by many critics purely for referencing reasons, it is important not to pigeonhole Lower Than Atlantis into one genre. There are elements on World Record that could be enjoyed by metal, punk, hardcore and even generic rock & pop fans alike. If you, dear reader, are a fan of any of the aforementioned genres, then please give Lower Than Atlantis a listen- you won’t be disappointed.
