When did Big Deal Clothing start?
It started 3 years ago when I finished Uni.
Why/how did it start?
Since I was younger I have always been creative and enjoyed making things, I was a keen bmxer and spent all my spare time making bmx videos, this got me into media which ended up with me going to University in Lincoln and getting a degree in Media Production. I always thought about creating my own clothing line so when I graduated I decided to go for it, so I saved up and bought my own screen printing equipment and spent many hours in my garage trying to learn it and creating the first Big Deal tees, then as the designs got more complicated and the quality of the prints needed to be the best I could get I started getting them printed professionally. Once they got to a standard I was happy with I built myself a website and a webstore and started to sell online. I also started touring the country and then Europe taking my tees to shows to get the word about. I have to say this was made possible by my very good friends in The Casino Brawl who took me on a lot of their tours in the UK, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Croatia, France, Austria, Italy. We have a massive following in Europe, and can’t wait to go back there and see all the friends we made.
What are the long term goals for Big Deal Clothing?
Long term, ideally just grow larger and larger giving us the chance to produce a even wider range of clothes, tour more countries, have Big Deal available in a few exclusive stores around Europe.
Who are your designers?
Big Deal appeals to a wide range of people and our customers vary hugely in style so to enable us to offer a lot of different styles we work with a few different designs from all over, we have 3 main designers, our good friend Martjins Leaners from Belgium, we have worked with him from the start having met him on tour with The Casino Brawl and he came highly recommended from them who he’d worked with in the past. He has done the designs for the Minty Tee, Big Tee, Play Ball Baseball Tee, Car Tee, Party Vest, Tote Bag, along with a lot of digital work for our flyers, posters and myspace designs. One of our other main designers is Colin Gaunty from Spain, we started working with him after he came recommended from our friends over at Dead Serious, Colin has done the designs for the slot machine, Tramp, Deal-icous Dog, plus couple of our upcoming designs, he also has designed a few stickers for us. Our other main designer is Richey Beckett from the might band Shaped By Fate, I have been a massive fan of their music for a long time, so to get to work with him now is great. His first bit of work for Big Deal was our logo, which originated as a design for a guitar pick but we loved it so decided to use it as our logo, he has also done designs such as the Eagle Sweater, Car Wash, Sweatpants and the shield hoodie.
Where did the inspiration come from?
The inspiration to start the company and my kind of idol is Johnny from Johnny Cupcakes in America, it was reading his story that inspired me to create Big Deal Clothing, seeing how a guy who started off in a printers printing a couple of tees for him and his mates could follow his dream and end up a multimillionaire with one of the most sort after clothing labels in America. I really admired the attention to detail and quality that he put into his clothes from day one.
